PRINTS and PRINTMAKING

My recent prints have combined processes such as woodcut and lithography with digital printing. The prints also include layers, through which one can see lower levels. This series of layers is also repeated within the prints in the form of transparent and opaque colours and shapes that allow lower levels to be partly seen. In other ways part of the image is hidden and it is left to the viewer to complete the image.

The majority of my prints have been produced by a combination of processes in the form of transparent layers.

"The Game" series of prints has been based, for the greater part, on the 1862 edition of the London Labour and the London Poor by Henry Mayhew, which is a survey of the streets of London. There are many interviews that bring to the surface the plight and the attitudes of the poor. However, in society as a whole there are many ways, many attitudes, that serve to cover up the unwanted and the unwashed. These observations are only part of a world that has been changed by invention, machinery and the rationality of a rich society.

Digital prints are normally created with one pass through the printer. These multi-layered prints were prepared in a similar way to a normal colour print by making at least four colour separations and printing each one separately.
